BYD Introduces Sealion 5 DM-i in the Philippines to Expand Affordable Hybrid Mobility

BYD $BYDDY Cars Philippines, distributed by ACMobility, has introduced the Sealion 5 DM-i, its newest and most cost-efficient plug-in hybrid crossover. As part of the growing DM-i series, the vehicle reflects BYD’s continued strategy to provide electrified mobility to a wider consumer base, with specific focus on affordability in emerging markets like the Philippines.

Sealion 5 Powertrain and Performance

The Sealion 5 operates on BYD’s DM-i hybrid system, which pairs a 1.5-liter internal combustion engine with a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The engine acts solely as a generator, recharging the 12.96 kWh battery that powers the electric motor. This structure enables extended electric range without full dependence on charging infrastructure.

The vehicle achieves a pure electric range of up to 71 kilometers, based on the NEDC testing cycle. When combined with the gasoline engine, the total driving range exceeds 1,000 kilometers, making it viable for both urban commutes and longer intercity trips. The system targets users seeking better fuel economy and lower emissions without transitioning to fully electric vehicles.

Strategic Positioning in BYD’s Local Portfolio

Following the domestic reveal of the eMAX 7 at the 2025 Manila International Auto Show, the Sealion 5 now enters the market as BYD’s most accessible electrified SUV. The model is positioned below the Sealion 6 in terms of size and pricing, and it aims to serve budget-conscious Filipino drivers exploring alternatives to conventional combustion cars.

To support market entry, BYD Cars PH has announced a launch price of PHP 1.198 million, signaling a competitive push into the growing plug-in hybrid segment. The cost positioning complements national efforts to accelerate EV adoption, especially in areas where charging networks remain limited.

What the Sealion 5 Brings to the Market

By targeting practicality and affordability, the Sealion 5 fills a unique niche in the hybrid crossover segment. It caters to drivers who prioritize fuel savings but require the extended range and flexibility that a hybrid configuration provides. Its market relevance is enhanced by its size, energy efficiency, and the government’s growing interest in sustainable mobility.

  • Powertrain: 1.5L gasoline engine (generator only).

  • Battery Capacity: 12.96 kWh LFP.

  • Electric Range (NEDC): 71 km.

  • Combined Range: Over 1,000 km.

  • Drive Layout: Front-wheel drive.

  • Launch Price: PHP 1,198,000.

The Sealion 5 serves as BYD’s entry point for Filipino buyers transitioning toward electrified driving. Its performance metrics and accessible pricing provide a strong value proposition in a segment increasingly shaped by efficiency mandates and consumer demand for alternatives to traditional gasoline vehicles.
