Boeing Aims for Recovery with Ambitious 737 MAX Production Targets

Shares of aerospace giant Boeing $BA surged by 4% following the company's announcement to boost production of the 737 MAX, its best-selling narrow-body aircraft. CEO Kelly Ortberg unveiled the updated 737 MAX manufacturing plan at the Bernstein conference, revealing goals to ramp up output to 47 jets per month by late 2025.

This move signals a renewed growth trajectory after years of turbulence linked to safety incidents and regulatory setbacks.

FAA Limitations Easing as Boeing Plans for Production Surge

After being restricted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in 2024—limiting 737 MAX production to 38 aircraft per month—Boeing now expects to reach 42 jets monthly by mid-2025 and 47 units by year-end.

These lifted restrictions follow internal overhauls in Boeing’s quality control systems, prompted by FAA intervention after a high-profile safety breach. The aerospace leader has since revamped its regulatory compliance processes to regain confidence among both regulators and the flying public.

Re-Entry into Chinese Market Offers Boost

A major milestone in Boeing’s international recovery involves the resumption of aircraft deliveries to China, one of the world’s largest aviation markets. Deliveries, paused due to trade restrictions under the previous U.S. administration, are expected to resume in June.

This development not only supports Boeing’s global aircraft sales but may also hint at easing U.S.–China trade tensions, which have long impacted the aerospace industry.

The 737 MAX Legacy and Recovery Path

The 737 MAX program, though historically successful, suffered massive reputational damage after two fatal crashes in 2018 and 2019. The ensuing global grounding shook customer trust and regulatory confidence.
